1st Reconnaissance Survey on the 2001 Gujarat-India Earthquake


1. Objective

The Gujarat-India Earthquake of January 26, 2001 destroyed hundreds of thousands of houses and buildings, and many thousand people were killed due to the earthquake. This must be one of the worst earthquake disasters in recent centuries. Considering the scale and seriousness of the disaster, Earthquake Disaster Mitigation Research Center (EDM), The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), has organized a reconnaissance survey team, in close cooperation with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bombay), India. The objectives of survey are 1) to collect and evaluate the damage truth and post-earthquake scenario, 2) to identify the need at the local level, and 3) to report them in order to advance the research on earthquake disaster mitigation in the world.
